One Million Meals and Counting: Full House Feeding Young Minds

Le Roi Van Niekerk ·

At Full House Furniture, we believe a home is more than furniture and appliances. It’s about people, families, and the communities we are part of. That belief has always guided how we do business, and it’s the reason our Corporate Social Investment programme focuses on something simple but powerful: making sure children start their day with a nutritious meal.

Over the past three years, together with our partner Outside the Bowl Africa, we’ve helped provide more than one million meals to children attending early learning centres across the Western Cape.

It’s a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, because behind every bowl of porridge is a child who can start their day ready to learn.

And as we say around here… dis nou BAKGAT.

Where It All Began

Our journey with Outside the Bowl Africa began in May 2021. The idea was straightforward: if Full House stores are part of a community, then we should also support the people in that community, especially the youngest members.

We started by supporting 14 local crèches near our stores. Today that number has grown to between 25 and 28 early learning centres every month, reaching around 1,000 children daily.

For many of these children, the porridge they receive at school is their first proper meal of the day. And that matters more than most people realise.

Teachers consistently tell us the same thing: when children eat before class, they are more focused, more energetic, and far more ready to participate and learn.

A simple meal can make a big difference.

A Meal Designed for Growing Minds

The porridge supplied through the programme is called VitaKidz Vitamin-Enriched Instant Energy Meal, developed to provide balanced nutrition for growing children.

Each serving is:

•    High in protein and energy
•    A source of fibre and Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids
•    Packed with essential vitamins including A, B₁, B₂, B₃, B₆, B₁₂, C, D₃ and E
•    Enriched with important minerals such as iron, selenium and zinc
•    Caffeine-free, lactose-free and gluten-free
•    Quick to prepare — simply add water or milk

The meal comes in four flavours: Original, Strawberry, Chocolate and Banana.
And while adults might debate nutrition labels, the kids have already made their choice clear. Strawberry and Chocolate are the favourites.

Keeping It Close to the Community

One of the reasons this programme works so well is that it stays close to the communities where our stores operate.

Every month the VitaKidz meals arrive at the Full House warehouse, already pre-packed and labelled for each participating crèche. From there they are sent out using our normal store delivery trucks.

But the final step is the most meaningful.

Our store managers personally deliver the meals to the schools in their area.

It’s a small act that builds real connections. Our teams get to know the teachers, the schools, and the children they’re helping support. It keeps the project visible, accountable, and rooted in the communities we serve.

Growing the Programme as We Grow

As Full House continues to expand, so does the programme.

Each new store is encouraged to identify one or two early learning centres in their community that could benefit from support. Store managers submit a short motivation explaining why the school was chosen, and once approved the school becomes part of the network receiving monthly porridge deliveries.

It’s a simple system, but it ensures the programme grows organically and locally, driven by the people who understand their communities best.

One Million Meals Later

Reaching one million meals served is an incredible milestone, but the real success of the programme isn’t just the number.

It’s the stories behind it.

The teacher who notices her class is more attentive in the morning.
The child who now has the energy to participate in activities.
The community that feels supported by the businesses around them.

For us, this programme reflects what community investment should look like: practical, consistent, and focused on real needs.

Thank You to the Full House Family

None of this would be possible without the support of our customers, staff, and partners.

Every purchase made at Full House Furniture helps support initiatives like this. Our store teams continue to go above and beyond to deliver the meals, build relationships with schools, and ensure the programme runs smoothly.

Together we’ve reached one million meals — and we’re just getting started.

Because when children start their day with nutrition, care, and support, we all help build a better future.

And that’s something we’re proud to stand behind.
